Understanding the Significance of Our Church Covenant: A 10-Week Exploration of Nine Key Promises

Updated: May 15

Our church covenant is more than a formal agreement; it is a heartfelt commitment that shapes how we live, worship, and grow together as a community. Over the next 10 weeks, we will explore the nine specific promises that form the foundation of this covenant. Each promise holds deep meaning and practical implications for our daily lives as members of our church family.

This series aims to help every member understand why these promises matter and how they guide us in building a strong, supportive, and faithful community. Let’s begin by looking at the role a church covenant plays in our spiritual journey.

What Is a Church Covenant and Why It Matters:

A church covenant is a mutual agreement among members to live according to shared values and commitments. It reflects our desire to honor God, support one another, and serve our community. Unlike a set of rules, it is a joy-filled living expression of faith and love for the cause and glory of Christ.

By agreeing to the covenant, members promise to:

  • Uphold biblical teachings

  • Participate actively in worship and service

  • Encourage spiritual growth in themselves and others

  • Maintain unity and peace within the church

These promises create a framework that helps us stay connected and accountable. They remind us that membership is not just about attendance but about active participation in the life of the church.

The Opening Statement of our Covenant:

“The church covenant is equal parts promise, summary of expectations, ethical statement, and biblical standard. These promises shall serve as our guiding commitments as a church for God’s glory, our personal joy, and the good of a watching world. As a follower of Jesus Christ, I joyfully and thoughtfully wish to apply for membership and join in mutual edification, fellowship, encouragement, and accountability with the other members of this body. I shall by God’s grace seek to exhibit the following”

Commitment to this fellowship should never stem from coercion, frustration, or reluctance. You’ll notice that our covenant begins by emphasizing that those joining do so with "joy"—a spirit of genuine excitement—and "thoughtfulness", rooted in prayer and full understanding.

“By God’s grace” – We must never attempt to live out these ten statements by relying on our own human will or strength. To accomplish anything of eternal worth, we must remain ever-dependent on God’s grace alone.

The word “seek” is also vital. Why? Because we recognize that no one at Raleigh Road—pastor or congregant—is perfect. While we will certainly make mistakes and need to practice both seeking and granting forgiveness, we must always strive to live out these principles. We do this for God’s glory (worship), for each other’s good (growth), and as a powerful witness to a watching world (mission).

As we begin this series together through our church covenant, I wish to leave you with a quote from Charles Spurgeon for which I have always found helpful;

“Give yourself to the Church. You that are members of the Church have not found it perfect and I hope that you feel almost glad that you have not. If I had never joined a Church till I had found one that was perfect, I would never have joined one at all! And the moment I did join it, if I had found one, I should have spoiled it, for it would not have been a perfect Church after I had become a member of it. - Still, imperfect as it is, it is the dearest place on earth to us… All who have first given themselves to the Lord, should, as speedily as possible, also give themselves to the Lord’s people. How else is there to be a Church on the earth? If it is right for anyone to refrain from membership in the Church, it is right for everyone, and then the testimony for God would be lost to the world!”
