Statement #1: What Does "Faithful Participation" Actually Mean?

Updated: May 15

In a culture that often promotes low commitment and consumeristic individualism, the biblical call to church engagement can feel counter-cultural. However, Scripture remains clear: a healthy church member is an active one. Our bylaws use the term "active" to describe what the Bible defines as a healthy and mature believer. But what does that look like in practice?

Statement #1

“I will faithfully participate with this church in weekly worship, prayer, fellowship, and in the observances of the ordinances of baptism and communion. As well, I will make it a priority, with all due diligence to seek to attend our regular family life meetings throughout the year.”

The Biblical Imperative: “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” — Hebrews 10:23-25

This Passage does not stand as a biblical suggestion. This passage (among others - 1 John 4:12, Hebrews 3:13, Galatians 5:13, Romans 12:10, 15:14, Ephesians 4:32, 1 Corinthians 1:9, 12: 12-27, Acts 2:44-46) stands as a biblical imperative full of wisdom and truth for the believer and the witness of the church. Meaning, God and not man has established that our confirmation, growth, and witness in the gospel is to be seen, experienced, and established by God’s Word (scripture), His Spirit (Holy Spirit) and through His people (the local expression of the church) in some sort of consistent pattern and commitment.

To be even more clear, this imperative for Christians to be actively and regularly involved in the life, witness, and ministry of the local church is so clear in scripture that failing to obey scriptures instruction in this is paramount to a lack of maturity, obedience, and wisdom for those declaring to be Christ’s disciples in this world.

It would be difficult to join the church for “mutual edification, fellowship, encouragement, and accountability” when, and if, as individuals we rarely or inconsistently (lack of priority and care) attend corporate services or other vital community related focuses of the church (i.e. Bible study, life groups, family life meetings, maybe even some fellowship events).

Why Active Participation Matters

To be clear: the mandate for Christians to be actively involved in the life, witness, and ministry of the local church is so consistent in Scripture that failing to obey this instruction is a sign of immaturity, disobedience, or a lack of wisdom. True, biblical health is found in covenant community. Let us commit to gathering, encouraging one another, and holding fast together. It is difficult to experience “mutual edification, fellowship, and accountability” if we are rarely present. Inconsistency in corporate worship or community life—such as Bible studies, life groups, or family meetings—hinders the very connection we joined the church to find.

What "Faithful Participation" Does NOT Mean

We want to be clear: this is not a demand for "perfect attendance." We understand that life happens:

  • Work Schedules: Obligations to provide for your family.

  • Life Events: Necessary commitments, vacations, and emergencies.

  • Healthy Boundaries: It isn't always helpful for everyone to attend every single event on the church calendar.

Our goal is not to fill a seat for the sake of a schedule; it is to see a church filled with people who take the scriptural command to grow and honor Christ seriously as we seek to be a people dependent on the Spirit and connected to one another for prayer, encouragement and accountability.

Why "Four Meetings" a Year?

You might ask: Where in the Bible does it say I must attend four family life meetings a year? The honest answer? It doesn’t. However, these meetings are designed to be powerful moments of worship, testimony, prayer, and decision-making for the direction of RRBC. While you won't find a "Thou Shalt" in Scripture regarding the number of such meetings, the leadership of RRBC believes this is a healthy minimal expectation for all covenant member to both value and to "Seek with all due diligence" to attend in showing love for the health of our congregation and your commitment to God’s glory.

Conclusion:

How do we use our gifts and experience the gifts of others consistently if not in the local church? How do we with regularity practice the “one another” commands of scripture unless we are not joined meaningfully and purposely together in a common goal and focus?

The local church gives people who mouth the words “I’m with Christ” the opportunity to demonstrate that those words mean something and are not merely hollow. God never desired for the Christian life to be an isolated experience. The local church enables the world to look upon the canvas of God’s people and see an authentic painting of Christ’s love and holiness and not a forgery. See you Sunday!
